Please confirm if I can board the plane and just arrive at Hanoi international airport and get a tourist upon arrival at Vietnam Immigration at the airport without any “visa approval letter” emailed to me prior to my departure. I can only present the acknowledgement that Vietnam Immigration has received all required documents, successful online application and their actual receipt of my online payment.

You cannot board the plane and just arrive at Hanoi international airport and get a tourist upon arrival at Vietnam Immigration at the airport without any “visa approval letter”.
You have to get the approval letter before hand and use it to board the plane and get visa at the airport.
