From the date of July 1st, 2016 to over the date of June 30th, 2017: Vietnam government continues to give out 15 days visa exemption policy for citizens from 5 countries: Kingdom of Great Britain, Republic of France, Federal Republic of Germany, Kingdom of Spain and Republic of Italy.
If you are going to enter Vietnam in Oct/2017, you need to apply visa and you can apply on our website for visa on arrival at this link: https://www.vietnam-evisa.org/apply-visa.html

I am looking to enter Vietnam on June 26th 2017 and plan on staying for 14 days. I am aware that the 15 days free visa for U.K. Citizens runs out on 1 July. Am I eligible for this free visa? As my return date is after July 1st 2017?

It will be counted from the date you enter Vienam.
You are going to enter on Jun/26 so you will not need visa if staying in Vietnam within 15 days
