I have just come back from Vietnam. I hold a UK passport and used the visa exemption scheme on that entry. I now need to return to Vietnam for 1 day next week - so that will be two visits in just over a week. I believe I therefore need a visa as travelling again with 3 days. Is that correct?

We confirm that your information is correct. Please note that your next visit date should be at least 30 days after the previous exit date if you want to enjoy the Vietnam visa waiver policy. In case your two visit dates are within 30 days, a Vietnam visa is required.
