Hai Van Gate reopens for tourists after two years of restorations

This historical site is a national relic under the management of two localities, Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang. Hai Van Gate was built in 1826 under the reign of King Minh Mang, located on the top of Hai Van pass, right in the middle of the administrative division line of Hue and Da Nang.

The project to preserve, restore, and promote the value of the Hai Van Gate was started in 2021 to preserve and restore this important historical and cultural relic, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region. The project has a total investment of more than VND42 billion (USD1.8 million) from the budgets of the two localities.

According to the representative of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, this restoration project has basically ensured the preservation of some original construction items of the relic including “The world’s most marvelous wonder” gate (facing Da Nang), Hai Van Gate (facing Thua Thien Hue), the headquarters, and the Great Wall system.

Under the Nguyen Dynasty, Hai Van Gate was an important pass, the gateway to the capital Hue from the South. Therefore, the Nguyen Dynasty concentrated a large force and weapons at Hai Van Gate to defend it. 

This is a work containing many cultural and historical values and is also a famous scenic spot, promising to contribute to the tourism development of Da Nang city and Thua Thien Hue province. In 2017, the site was recognized as a national relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
