Fueled by Open Visa Policies Vietnam's Tourism Booms in 2024

Posted by Vietnam-Evisa.Org on Jan 10, 2025

Vietnam's tourism sector experienced a remarkable resurgence in 2024, welcoming a record-breaking 17.6 million international visitors. This significant 39.5% increase compared to the previous year signifies a robust recovery from the pandemic's impact. A key factor contributing to this success is Vietnam's proactive approach to visa policies, which facilitated smoother travel experiences for international visitors.

Let's take a look at highlights in 2024 of Vietnam inbound tourism with Vietnam-eVisa.Org:

  • Robust Growth: The 17.6 million figure represents a substantial increase, demonstrating the appeal of Vietnam's diverse cultural and natural attractions.
  • Dominance of Asian Markets: Asian countries continued to be the primary source of tourists, with South Korea leading the pack of 4.5 million arrivals, up 27% year-on-year. It was followed by mainland China with 3.73 million visitors, Taiwan (1.28 million), the U.S. (779,000), and Japan (711,000), according to the General Statistics Office.
  • Tourism peak: In December alone, Vietnam recorded its highest monthly total of the year, welcoming 1.75 million foreign visitors.
  • Air Travel Remains Preeminent: Air travel remained the dominant mode of entry for international visitors with nearly 15 millions arrivals, accounting for a substantial portion of arrivals.

Vietnam's open Visa policies are being maintained until now:

  • E-Visa convenience: Vietnam grants E-Visa for foreign arrivals from all countries, territories in the world, prolongs its validity to up to 90 days with single and multiple entries.
  • Visa Exemptions: The expansion of visa-free entry for citizens from 13 countries up to 45 days of key source markets significantly reduced travel barriers and encouraged spontaneous travel decisions. In 2024, Vietnam adds Mongolia to the Visa exemption list,  accordingly, Mongolia passport holders can enter Vietnam without a Visa for a maximum stay of 30 days. Check Visa exemption list.
  • Streamlined Procedures: The government's efforts to streamline visa application procedures and improve border control efficiency further enhanced the overall travel experience.

While the 2024 data reflects a positive trajectory, the tourism sector still faces challenges. Arccordingly, despite nearing its target of 18 million, Vietnam's foreign tourist numbers were significantly lower than other Southeast Asian countries. Maintaining sustainable tourism practices, diversifying tourism offerings beyond traditional hotspots, and addressing infrastructure gaps in certain regions remain crucial for long-term growth.

The Vietnamese government has implemented various strategies to further boost the tourism sector, including visa liberalization policies, infrastructure improvements, and targeted marketing campaigns. By capitalizing on its rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and growing international appeal, Vietnam is well-positioned to solidify its position as a leading tourist destination in Southeast Asia.
